Part of Crabtree Publishing Company's Tadpoles series, which provides structured tales for children who are just beginning to read on their own, The Lost Broomstick is the story of Tess, a little witch whose lost broomstick causes mischief wherever it goes. With a basic sentence on every two-page spread - there are forty-two words in the story, altogether - this is perhaps too elementary of a read for me to have truly enjoyed it. That said, with its very basic structure and its colorful artwork, I think it will work quite well for its intended audience. Recommended to young children who are just beginning to read on their own, and who enjoy magical stories. ( )

Tess has lost her broomstick and she is NOT happy. Nobody else can fly it...but perhaps Cass the cat can help? The Tiddlers series features fun stories with a word count of fewer than 50 words for children who are just starting to read.A word list at the beginning of the story allows for a quick check of the reader's ability to read and understand words before reading, and a puzzle at the end of the story encourages rereading for pleasure.

Although Tess's lost broomstick is found several times, no one can ride it except her--and, perhaps, her cat Cass.
