I bought this book used and written inside it says: "Property of Capt. Sidney J. Dillon, Police Dept. Syracuse, N.Y. Please return this book as soon as you have finished."

This is the story of the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of the City of New York written by Dr. M. Edward Marten, the Deputy Chief Medical Examiner. I thought that his chapter on deaths from asphyxia was particularly good, hitting just the right balance of what needed to be explained and what did not.

In the preface Dr. Marten says that he wrote the book believing that almost everyone who enjoys a good detective story will be interested in being conducted behind the scenes and seeing how crimes are actually solved. His second object was to "bring home to people the sickening inefficiency of the antiquated coroner system which is still muddling along in almost every town, city and county in the United States." In that he was unsuccessful since there are still coroners in my neck of the woods and they still don't have any medical training.

Between cases Dr. Marten also states his opinions about disability and insurance claims being decided by people with no medical training. How little things have changed since 1937.

A few b&w illustrations and no index.
