This book is really superior to the books usually found in these glossy series. It is well written, easy to understand in spite of the medical terms, very well documented, the whole nine yards. It is exactly the kind of book that I wish I had been given to read when I was starting my first round of chemotherapy. Specific doctors and real patients are named and photographed. It is written in a very matter-of-fact style, straight forward but not too graphic. For example, patients were photographed bald but the worst effects of neutropenia are "illustrated" by an anecdote about a real patient but without a photo. Some historical vignettes and unconventional therapies are included in sidebars that break up the text. There are chapter notes, additional reading and an index in the back of the book.

Since this book was published in 2003 and it is now 2013, there are probably some details that are medically out of date, however, not in any way that substantially diminishes its interest.

I would like to note that I am always suspicious of authors who have written books on a number of different topics - that they are professional writers who are just putting a lot of words together without any real understanding the subject. Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen, however, has undergraduate and graduate degrees in biology and I felt when reading that she had understanding and interest in the subject area.

I have only seen this volume in the "Great Medical Discovery" series. The other volumes listed on the back cover are: Cloning, Gene therapy, Germs, Heart Transplants, and The Microsope. ( )
