Fashions in the Era of Jane Austen by Jody Gayle is a 2012 Publications of the Past Release.

If you are a fan of: Jane Austen, fashion, regency period, or history you will most likely enjoy this book. If you are a historian or an author doing research or student doing a paper for school, you might find this book a wonderful resource tool.

Beginning January 1809-the author illustrated a Walking Dress and Evening Full and takes us up through each month of the year and even includes children's clothing. This book isn't just about ladies fashions, the gentleman's fashions are described as well.

We are walked through each month of each year going all the way up to the year 1820. There are detailed descriptions of the fabrics, the social occasions the fashions were worn, and a sketch or drawing, most in color, to demonstrate the way the outfit or hat was worn.

This book make a wonderful reference guide and was absolutely fascinating. While I loved seeing these dresses and all the attention to detail that went into them, I am glad we don't have to put all those clothes on now. It's no wonder ladies needed help getting dressed back in this era of time, especially if it were a formal outing. Whew! At any rate, this book was fun to look at and made for some lively discussions and lots of oohs and aahs. 4 stars ( )

What gown would you wear to be the belle of the ball in April 1811? Choose any month and any year between 1809 and 1820 to find the most fashionable attire to wear in Regency England. Fashions in the Era of Jane Austen is a pictorial of images collected from Ackermann's Repository of the Arts. Find splendid illustrations of morning, evening, riding, and walking dresses with the accompanying accessories: hats, shoes, scarves, jewelry, parasols and more. Over two hundred and seventy-five exquisite illustrations with the original accompanying descriptions as they were published over two hundred years ago. Discover the voice of the past through the written language of each narrative. Fashions in the Era of Jane Austen covers twelve years of fashion, the last two years of the Georgian period (1809-1810) and the entire ten years of the Regency period (1811-1820). The pictures alone make this a great book, even if one doesn't read a word of the fashion descriptions.
