A mixed collection of ghost stories from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Highlights for me were the following stories which built up and sustained an atmosphere of real dread, mystery or pathos (though some of these were hardly ghost stories per se): The Lost Ghost (Mary E Wilkins Freeman), The Room in the Tower (E F Benson), The Haunted and the Haunters (Lord Edward Bulwer-Lytton), Miss Jeromette and the Clergyman (Wilkie Collins), The Judge's House (Bram Stoker), The Withered Arm (Thomas Hardy) and The House of the Nightmare (Edward Lucas White).
