Franz Werfels Roman ist kein leichter Genuss, keine Lektüre für Querleser. Er steckt voller metaphysischer Spekulationen, ironischer Seitenhiebe, unerwarteter Bilder. Er regt an und auf. Seine Sprache ist spröde, keine glatte Umgangssprache. Oft mit französischen und lateinischen Worten durchsetzt.
