A good first novel by Tauranga author Karolyn Timarkos, first book in 'The Atlas Chronicles' series. Fifteen-year-old twins Brianna and Hamish are proud of their Welsh ancestry that is traceable back over a thousand years. They don't realise that this heritage includes being 'Keeper of the Atlas', a book that will lead them on a quest around time pursued by an immortal knight who plans to enslave humanity. What I didn't like: I wasn't too keen on the book cover and felt that the acknowledgements should have been at the end of the book rather than taking up space at the beginning. Good to see a contents page but I would have liked to see a pronunciation guide and guide to the runes also included. I found the monkey constantly referring to Brianna as 'Mom' irritating as was the note to the reader on page 50 of the book which served to bring the reader completely out of the fantasy world being created with a bit of a start. What I did like: The actual bones of this story are fantastic and the background research that has gone into it is extensive, however I felt that sometimes I was being given a history lesson at the expense of the flow of the story. I think this is a really interesting concept and with a bit more editing has the potential to be an amazing story. Well done! ( )
