Après un traumatisme, la logique conduit à en prévoir les séquelles. Désormais, sont également envisagées les conditions qui permettront la reprise d'un nouveau développement, ce que l'on appelle la résilience. L'étude de ces conditions, internes et externes, qui facilient ou empêchent le processus de résilience, ne peut être que pluridisciplinaire : neurosciences, éthologie, psychologie, psychanalyse, thérapies familiales, sociologie. Les linguistes et les artistes expliquent quant à eux l'importance des récits collectifs qui entourent un blessé et empêchent, dans certaines cultures, le processus de résilience, alors qu'il est possible d'en faire un outil de "reprise évolutive". Les auteurs font l'état des lieux des connaissances interdisciplinaires autour de ce fameux concept.
