(Italia/Francia/Jugoslavia 1963, b/n, 128') Mario Monicelli. Con Marcello Mastroianni, Anna Girandot, Renato Salvatori Folco Lulli, Bernard Blier, Gabriella Giorgielli, Raffaella Carrà, Vittorio Sinipoli, Pippo Starnazza, Mario Pisu. Il professore Sinigaglia (Mastroianni) guida uno sciopero di lavoratori tessili torinesi alla fine dell'Ottocento. L'arrivo di un gruppo di crumiri, alcuni tafferugli - durante i quali muore un operaio (Lulli) - e l'intervento della polizia fanno fallire lo sciopero, ma gli operai hanno cominciato a prendere coscienza delle loro forze. Sceneggiato da Monicelli stesso insieme ad Age e Scarpelli, il film è un affresco spettacolare, divertito e malinconico sul nascente movimento operaio dove qualche sdolcinatura alla De Amicis non limita la forza di questa commossa rievocazione del socialismo torinese agli inizi del secolo. Per niente in sintonia con l'ostinato ottimismo della rampante Italia del boom, il film non fu amato in Italia (Chiarini lo bocciò per il festival di Venezia) ma ottenne due nomination all'Oscar per il soggetto e la sceneggiatura. Per il lancio pubblicitario del film furono utilizzate una serie di interviste a vecchi quadri operai. ( )
