TWO & A HALF STARS--Hollis Shiloh's "Adrian's Librarian" is a regency (my fave historical period) MM romance novella featuring an orphaned, disowned 20 year old, Oliver, who is without protection and given to molly house (homosexual brothel) and Adrian, a 24 year old renowned gentleman rake.
Adrian meets Oliver by mistake but is drawn to the crying young man. (Warning: MANTEARS are ever present in this one!) Adrian somehow likes the buckets of tears and purchases Oliver's services under the pretense of fixing his library. At this point, I have yet to read about Adrian's rakish ways. There were hints to a possible devious past but it was more talk than show.
So Oliver is saved from having to be a rent boy (maybe?)- once again no definite details were given. Oliver is a definite crier, he cries when he sad, happy and it felt like to pass the time. (I'm not a supporter of incessant crying from male nor female characters) Oliver might have been molested/raped - the actual details were not discussed by a male tutor in the past.
Maybe if there were more details about his ordeals or actual proof of Adrian being a rake, I might have cared. The best part of rakes in regencies is getting to read about their descent into monogamy/being in love. This story has it but Adrian was not a rake and Oliver did nothing to be desirous. MANTEARS do not seduce in my book.
With the rampant MANTEARS, the mere kisses and barely mentioned handjobs that left me more limp than wanting more and the weak/weird ending in Mushville, I was not moved. In fact, I was not invested in either main characters, we only get to learn few crumbs about the main characters instead of the entire cookie.
Meh.
