Oedipus in the Ozarks. Dark, lyric, mesmerizing, haunting. ( )

This book really intrigued me for the first 50 pages or so, then I found myself becoming less and less interested and by the end it was really hard to get through. Gay is a good writer, but I think maybe the story was a bit too masculine and backwoods for me. The chase between Tyler and Sutter seemed to go on forever and was similar to McCarthy's No Country for Old Men. I really wanted to like it more because it was recommended by someone I really respect and value their opinion, but it just did not quite work for me. ( )
