Well, I do have The End of Mr. Y and Alias Grace on my shortlist, so I think I will join in when I get to them! I have read several others, so it will be fun to see what people think of those. I may even manage to pick up one or two others (what? me buy more books? I meant THE LIBRARY! Real ... I've read about two chapters of the end of mr y and am hooked; I can't wait to see how the plot and ideas develop.
I would add my love for the time traveller's wife, so poignant and beautiful.

I've just read it, but I can't check because I've posted it off on a bookring... ... thought it would be the perfect opportunity. I had read George Eliot (Silas Marner) at school but nothing since then.
The End Of Mr Y - had seen in bookshops and been intrigued by the cover, but not enough to buy it. Then I got an ERC copy from LT...

Urania The End of Mr. Y has been recommended to me before and I almost bought it one day in a bookshop but I must have been trying to be more modest in my purchases. ... among European writers right now. If you like a bit of speculative fiction mixed in with your mysteries then I suggest The End of Mr. Y and Popco by Scarlett Thomas. She also has a series of mysteries featuring Lily Pascale, post-modern literary theorist/detective. I've read Dead Clever ... I'm offering The End Of Mr Y - you can PM me on the thread if interested. 87. Thirteen by Sebastian Beaumont. A little bit similar to The End Of Mr Y, in that it's about a parallel universe which is initially seductive but later scary, although you get to this one by driving a taxi until you're past exhaustion, rather than by imbibing homeopathic mixtures and ... Oh, I wanted The End of Mr Y, but they weren't sending that to us in the States. It sounds so fascinating. I've never done BookCrossing, though, how does that work? ... eye on human motivations - but it was a little bit too didactic for me to really like, if you know what I mean.

I would never have predicted that the UK population wanting to read The End of Mr. Y would equal the combined US and Canadian population wanting to read Anathem. In fact, I probably would've bet money against it. Neal is one of the most ... Scarlett Thomas is fabulous! I can't pinpoint why I like her work so much. I have only read Bright Young Things and The End of Mr Y so I have plenty of more books to read by her. There's something about her writing that just grips me. ... was dreadful, I wished I'd given up on it. I'm about to start The Blood of Flowers in the next few days and I read The End of Mr Y last year. It was actually my favourite book of 2007. I loved it!

It's really wonderfully good, but it's bloody odd. It's the most bizarre, surreal ... The end of Mr Y by Scarlett Thomas ... by Peter Sheridan. I have started the last one (by accident) and had to force myself to put it down. I should be reading The end of Mr Y and I already stopped once to read Things the Grandchildren Should Know. That shouldn't be a reflection on The End of Mr Y because I am really enjoying ... ... I was expecting it to be similar to The Glass Books of the Dream-Eaters in the time-period etc and similar maybe to The End of Mr Y. I'm worried now that I'm going to be disappointed. ... character and the book, were strong influences in my childhood. I even was her one year for Halloween. How are you liking The End of Mr Y? I'm waiting for a used copy myself.

This arrived yesterday and I paused my reading of The End of Mr Y to get started on it. I didn't mean to but in the first three pages it was so awful and compelling that when I skimmed it I couldn't put it down. It's ... It is now called the Costa award, but when the author won it it was the Whitbread.
The end of Mr. Y is a good book, but not the one I'm looking for.
Another hint: you won't find this book in my catalog.

Is there another name for that award besides Whitebread? ... of both men and the worlds they lived in. It's been promoted to the top of the TBR pile, ready for when I finish reading The End of Mr Y.
#188 your friend sounds very kind, I'm reading The End of Mr Y by Scarlett Thomas and it is just 452 pages long, but it is an especially tall book so it would have been longer if it had been shorter, if that makes sense.
The person below me would read a book if they knew it was cursed (it's the tagline on my book). ... a reply. The book is almost entirely made up of these letters and I will be reading it as soon as I finish my current book The End of Mr Y by Scarlett Thomas, which is also really good. The end of Mr Y by Scarlett Thomas arrived in the post today, along with Mr Gum and the Power Crystals by Andy Stanton. I've been looking forward to the first one arriving and my brothers kids have been waiting for the second, so we were all happy today. ... down (you get free delivery if you wait for them to be sent in one go.)

So Long and Thanks for All the Fish by Douglas Adams The End of Mr Y is on my TBR pile. Think I'm feeling a bit put off now though. Please don't hate The Crimson Petal - I love it soooooo much it hurts when other people don't like it - though if you found it hard to get through, Under the Skin is much, much easier. ... tho'. A searing indictment of meat-eating culture sounds good, no matter how cliched the phrase is. :)
Also, I've heard The End of Mr. Y can be a bit of work to get through. Hm. Maybe I'll try it anyway, as I loved loved loved Popco (which I just finished; I don't usually put my reviews/tho ... I read The End of Mr. Y several months back. There's an animal-rights plotline in there involving mice. I read some reviews after I finished the book, and found that the critics generally praised the brainier post-structuralist elements of the book, while labeling the mice plotline as ... ... it's mentioned really clumsily, but otherwise I think it's not preachy or obvious thus far @ all. I'll probably try her The End of Mr. Y soon too.
Anyone else have any leads on fiction w/sympathetic vegan characters (or that does interesting/positive stuff w/vegan/AR themes)? Ok, I tried tagmash for science fiction, vegan and only came up with 4 books. Of those, end of mr. y had several favorable reviews... although I haven't read it. I think I will try to find a copy now though.

Started number 13 this lunchtime, PopCo by Scarlett Thomas. I loved her The End of Mr Y, and I think I am getting the same vibe from this one. Spiffo! I'll third The End of Mr. Y. Where else you gonna get sordid sex, philosophy, metaphysics and thought experiment access to the Matrix between the covers of one book? I second The End of Mr. Y. I loved that book. The End of Mr Y by Scarlett Thomas. A fabulous book, I think it's my favourite of books read this year so far. And a curious buy. I read a review of what I supposed was a new hardback in a Sunday newspaper, but when I searched for it, I found it had been released as a small press paperback ... ... to narrow my list down.
