Your reviewEnjoyable, but not captivating. Even though I read the book twice in less than six months, it is not one I would recommend. I felt the storytelling and character development were too simplistic for what I assume to be an older audience (unlike the Harry Potter series which is not only written for a younger audience, but also has both a magical escapist quality and emotional complexity to the characters which appeal in different ways to different age groups).

However, woven throughout the story are a few gems...observations of humanness that are insightful, provocative.

Most compelling was the story of Narcissus as told in the prologue, and the lake that wept for him, for "each time he knelt beside my banks, I could see, in the depths of his eyes, my own beauty reflected."
