Brightman's translation of Lancelot Andrewes' Praeces Privatae is outstanding for its introduction and comprehensive notes. Bishop Andrewes' renowned erudition--he was one of the translators of the King James Version of the Bible--is mirrored in his highly allusive private devotions, and Brightman has annotated each allusion. An added benefit of this particular edition is the inclusion of T.S. Eliot's landmark 1926 essay 'Lancelot Andrewes'. (
