Science Fiction I really liked The Darwin Elevator so I knew I would read this second book in the Dire Earth Cycle. I didn't like it quite as much as the first one but it was still a gripping story. I've already requested the third installment from my library. In this book the breakaway scientists led by Tania Sharma are settled in at Belem Brazil where the second elevator is located. In addition to the elevator which projects an aura that protects people from the plague there are movable towers which can be used by people to get around the city. Of course, Skyler Luiken is immune to the disease so he can go anywhere without a movable tower. While on a foray he sees a young woman dancing by herself and realizes she must also be an immune. She runs when he makes his presence known but they do meet up later. Other immunes led by a charismatic ex police officer attack the colony at the elevator and Skyler must try to set them free. In the ensuing fight most of the towers leave the compound on their own and set out in four different paths. Skyler wants to know where they have gone but Tania thinks it is too dangerous. Tania and Skyler become estranged and Ana, the dancing girl, becomes Skyler's new love interest. How will this saga end? I guess I'll have to read the third book. The second book deals with colonization of the new tower that has arrived and a new leader in Darwin is taking over the town. Secrets that Neil kept from the world are revealed to a few people and then there is a immune group that is run like a cult. Lots of action in this one and fallout from decisions people made in the first book. I have to admit is is great that the books are coming out quickly. And book 3 will follow this one fairly fast as well. Digital copy provided by the publisher through Edleweiss no reviews | add a review
