( )This is a quick, enjoyable read. I curled up with it one rainy afteroon and before I knew it, I had finished it. I felt like the characters in the book were my own family and I knew them. Like the beautiful cakes being made, this book was my comfort "food" --a warm diversion on a dull, depressing day. I loved how the main character used baking as her "therapy" from the financial stresses facing her husband and family. From her love of baking, she developed a passion for a career that not only provided her with happiness, but also the necessary means to help support her family. Doing something that you love and getting paid for it-Who could ask for anything better! ! And bonus--you can try your hand on some of the cake recipes in the back. My favorites were almond apricot pound cake and sweet potato bundt cake! Bon appetit! I adore Jeanne Ray!! She is hilarious - I've read all her books. This is a story of a wonderful mom, Ruth, who bakes cakes as a stress reliever. And she's really baking these days because her mother has moved in with her; her estranged father breaks both his hands and must also come live with them. Then to top it off, her husband receives a pink slip. With tension high and money low, the characters come out of their shells to reveal hidden talents so that the family can carry on. Ray's characters are always so real plus the events have you smiling on every page. Try this - it's funny and heartwarming. (so are all her other books - Julie and Romeo, J&R again and Step-Ball Change.) When both of Ruth's divorced parents end up moving in with her, and her husband loses his job, Ruth expects life to change drastically, but she never suspects that her obsession for baking cakes will be just the thing that will pull them all together and get the family back on track. This is a tale for the sandwich generation that is as warm and sweet as a fresh baked cake. My first experience with Jeanne Ray and I was in love with her writing from the start. The main character felt like a good friend and a sister. no reviews | add a review
