Stop me if you've heard this one. A thief, a candlemaker, an ex-mercenary, and a pig farmer walk into a trap...and what happens to them is no joke. When Riyria is hired to retrieve a jester's treasure, Royce and Hadrian must match wits with a dwarf who proves to be anything but a fool. Difficult choices will need to be made, and in the end those who laugh last do so because they are the only ones to survive. This is a standalone short story of 7,200 words. No prior knowledge of The Riyria Revelations or The Riyria Chronicles is required to enjoy it to its fullest, making this a perfect introduction for listeners new to the series or a chance for Riyria veterans to spend a little more time with old friends. The Jester is a story of adventure, bonds of friendship, and a recognition that the choices we make dictates the future we find.… (more)

Nice short story with a little excitement and a little humor. My first time reading anything by the author and I enjoyed it. ( )

Dear Michael, if you ever write anything else drop-in-the-middle, know that I'm your reader. It's my kind of thing. Thanks!

This was fun!
Being dropped in the middle of action works well for me, so this was right up my alley.

I'm definitely reading all the Riyria books. ( )

A laugh-out-loud -I did, I promise. In the middle of an OB/GYN lecture- short story, free from the author if you ask for it or from Google if you search for it. Adventure! ( )

Short story that I read in Unfettered but it's free on Audible, 99 cents at other places or he will send you a free copy if you'd like.

It was great, 4.5*. We get to watch the characters do a quest and it's a bit like choose your own adventure. This can be a standalone, you do not need to be familiar with his world or characters.

Author notes: "I essentially wrote this short as if it were the end of longer work. The climax, if you will, of a longer story. In it, I reference prior events for context which allowed me to take what COULD have been a novel and made it into a short story." ( )

This is a short in the ongoing adventures of a group of thieves. In this one, they're seeking the treasure of a jester who didn't much like the people he entertained. He amassed great wealth, and had an elaborate, hidden tomb built. There's a map to the tomb, but it was torn into eight pieces hidden in different places.

At the time this story opens, our little band of thieves has acquired the final piece of the map, and is nearly there. They now have to figure out all the tricks and traps the jester used to protect his corpse and his treasure.

It's a puzzle story, and to reach the treasure they have to figure out not just what traps there are, but what the jester was thinking. Did he intend to stop anyone from finding his treasure? Or did he just intend to frustrate the people he hated? And how?

Light but fun.

I bought this book. ( )

Hadrian discovered the most fascinating thing about plummeting in total darkness wasn't the odd sense of euphoria from the free fall or the abject terror from anticipating sudden death but that he had the time to contemplate death.
