I have persevered with Harry Sidebottom's Ballista Rome novels primarily as they've a good reputation. But each one I find less interesting than the last. It is, I think, a problem of context; he writes well about the detail, and has occasional nice turns of phrase, but somehow the narrative that pulls different scenes together isn't strong enough.

Its almost the inverse problem with Simon Scarrow, perhaps the leading author in the Roman military history genre, who tells a great yarn, but just sometimes you wish for a slightly more accomplished writing style. Ideally, they'd collaborate. ( )
