2409 W. B. Yeats: A New Biography, by A. Norman Jeffares (read 14 Sep 1991) This is a 1989 work re Yeats (born in Dublin 13 June 1865 and died 28 Jan 1939 on the French Riviera). I do not admire Yeats, and most of his poetry I do not respond to. He won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1923. This biography tells the story of his life but it tells it as if one already knew it. It puts no oomph or flavor in it, and particularly in the early parts it was a chore to read. Yeats spent a lot of time at seances and was into "automatic writing" and a lot of like nonsense. He ignored World War I and I felt no empathy with him. ( )

Book description

Amazon.com Book Description (ISBN 0826455247, Paperback)

Half a century ago, Norman Jeffares wrote the definitive biography of W.B. Yeats, which was subsequently published in a revised edition in 1990 to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the poet's death. The present volume, a re-issue of the 1990 edition with a new introduction and bibliography, is an account of Yeats's life and work, together with a fascinating collection of letters, photographs and poetry.
