A nicely put together book. It actually reads more like a course in heraldry because each section builds upon the last. It is very comprehensive for how heraldic symbols are used in Europe. The beginning starts by a very interesting history of heraldry and why it became so important in the feudal period. By the end you will have an excellent idea on where different devices are placed and have a pretty good idea what they mean. You might want to accurately design your own design after reading this. It is certainly very interesting.

It is important to note that this book really deals most with European heraldry. It does not go in to much Arabic or Eastern heraldry. It is also not an encyclopaedia for the meaning of heraldic devices. ( )
