5 stars for a debut author and debut press, Gobreau Press. It's been over a week since I read "Rapeseed", and I keep mulling over the family relationships. The colorful theme drew me but Carolann's son added a great benefit to reading this book. I left the book with a new favorite fictional character, Carolann's son. His growth and independent thoughts kept my attention throughout the book. ( )

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 098870840X, Paperback)

Carolann Cooper's family has moved abroad from a small town in Kansas to London, England, and her worldview is totally upended. Carolann has synesthesia -- a brain phenomenon of cross-wired senses. She sees letters and numbers in color, she experiences smells and music and memories through clouds of color, taste, texture, and sound. Synesthesia can be disruptive, or it's considered a talented artist's gift. In Carolann's case, it is isolating and lonely -- until she moves to England, where everything changes. Her husband's goals are certainly changing. Her once straight-A student teenage son now wants to be a rapper and a basketball player, and a boyfriend to a very worldly, foul-mouthed young lady. Carolann is desperate to fit the pieces of her family's life back together, but since the move, they don't fit the same way, and she needs new patterns. Everything has changed, including the turbulent colors of her memories, her marriage, and her unusual history with her twin sister's husband. The health of her marriage and her son -- and her own stability -- hang in the balance as she finally dares to untangle things.
