This was an interesting book.

Hellboy, kid, teen, lives surrounded by adults at all times (various agents and scientists from BPRD). Living in such surroundings it is no surprise he considers himself to be one of the team so when he gets put to his place he takes it very hard. Since he is in a very sensitive teen years (when almost anything will annoy the teen :) ) this results in his rebellious escape one night when he comes across the mysterious circus advertising marvels and show from midnight to the crack of dawn.

Puzzled he decides to see the circus show but very soon he will find himself in company of monsters that will tease him to [by reacting to their actions] do what he was meant to do on Earth from the beginning - open the gates of Hell.

Excellent story, I especially liked parallels with the Pinocchio, both aspiring to become true boys but making errors on the way to achieving their goal - errors that scare them and sometimes scar them but errors that are nevertheless part of the growing up.

Art as always is very beautiful, Duncan Fegredo is truly an excellent artist.

Highly recommended to all fans of Hellboy and/or eerie stories. ( )

Actually, I gave it 4.5 out of 5, but we all GoodReads and fractions don't play nice together.

Young Hellboy runs away and stumbles onto the Midnight Circus, a frightening place where it's difficult to tell friend from foe. The story is juxtaposed with that of Pinocchio, someone else who at times wants to be a "real boy." It was a little scary and a little sweet, just the way I like my Hellboy.

I just finished this book and the one complaint I have is that it is too damn short. You have to wait forever for a new book and then it is so short.

I loved it, I really enjoy the stories of whem he is young. I just wish that Mike Mignola would write like a 300+ graphic novels about Hellboy and BPRD. Maybe that would be a nice fix for this Hellboy junkie, of course I would still want more.

This is a great read and well worth the price and time. ( )

Young Hellboy is still not sure that he fits in at the BPRD. He doesn't seem like anyone else and people keep telling the Professor that he's dangerous! One night after hearing another man encourage the Professor to read a passage about the dangers that Hellboy represents he runs away and encounters...the Midnight Circus. A dark circus that tries to get Hellboy to realize to come away with them...and perhaps doom the world. What will Hellboy do?

This is a relatively short book, only 58 pages, but Mike Mignola is at the top of his game. In this story we learn more about Hellboy's childhood and just how many people were afraid of him...including some denizens from hell itself. The story has parallels to Pinocchio (it's even mentioned in the story) with the running away, encountering a circus, even encountering a whale. And the artwork is a perfect complement to the story, with Duncan Fegredo's beautiful watercolor illustrations to bring Hellboy and the Circus to life.

Although the price is a bit steep (seriously $14 for 58 pages?), the book is 4 out of 5 stars for a great look into young Hellboy's life. ( )
