1916: A Novel of the Irish Rebellion by Morgan Llywelyn ... (That series just keeps getting better.)
Last week I was in early 20th century Ireland, reading Morgan LLywelyn's 1916: A Novel of the Irish Rebellion. Not an era I usually hang out in, but quite good. ... Trilogy by Roddy Doyle
The Princes of Ireland and The Rebels of Ireland by Edward Rutherfurd
Trinity by Leon Uris
1916 and 1921 by Morgan Llewellyn
Circle of Friends by Maeve Binchy ... reccommend the Morgan Llywelyn books-- choppy, syrupy prose, melodramatic characters; man, I forced myself to finish 1916 and gave up on 1972... ... informative, but maybe you want to look further back than that. For example:
Last September by Elizabeth Bowen
1916 by Morgan Llywelyn
The Wind that Shakes the Barley by Ken Loach
The Magdalen by Marita Conlon-McKenna (wrong touchstone) 71. 1916: A Novel of the Irish Rebellion by Morgan Llywelyn
A light read, but full of interesting historical tidbits. The characters were totally two-dimensional and sentimental, but hey, the ending (which anyone who has read anything about Ireland already knew!) made me cry, and I enjoyed ... ... on ancient Ireland (The Lion of Ireland is one of my all-time favorites), but she also wrote about recent past history in 1916, 1921, and 1949, which are probably more historically correct if that is what you are after.
