This slim volume of stories packs a serious punch, and makes me look forward to what the author will do with a full-length novel. Not all the stories land, but the first one, and the entire Farrell Cycle do. From Justin-Beiber-as-Faust to Sexually-confused-Math-Tutotor as Christ/redeemer, these stories focus in on surface vs. interior very well. The author plays with identity in some very interesting ways, too, inviting us to consider J. Merridew-as-character and that figure's relationship to the author of the same name as well as what they both might have in common with the author (something other authors, such as Bret Easton Ellis, have done). At times a bit self-indulgent, but the strength of the stories I mentioned make up for it. Recommended. ( )
