Some good stories, bats about 50/50. ( )

*This review is only for the InCryptid portion of the anthology at this point.*

I love Antimony so much, and I love Roller Derby. This was another fun, small insight into how Antimony's life differs and how it's similar to Verity's life. I am loving getting to know Antimony better, and I'm also loving a bit more glimpses into the cousin that is Artie. McGuire really has hooked me into this world of Cryptids. ( )

A collection of short stories all of which have a supernatural bent and feature some sort of game, though game is in some cases really loosely interpreted. The standout stories for me were Hide and Seek by William Kent Kreuger featuring a creepy game of hide and seek at an orphanage. I also liked the Case of the Haunted Safeway by Scott Sigler featuring two ghosts and a love story and Hide and Shriek by Adam-Troy Castro which was funny and scary. The Sookie Stackhouse story was pretty forgettable. I know a few of the other stories featured characters from series but not ones I have read. ( )

A fun collection of supernatural story telling! The stories follow the same thread in that they all revolve around games. The variety of play makes them all stand out on their own. A few authors that I’ve read before and really enjoyed in this book were Charlaine Harris, Scott Sigler and Laura Lippman. Harris brings Sookie Stackhouse into this short story not as the main character, but with a supporting role that helps create a really cool story. Sigler’s “The Case of the Haunted Safeway” was a great piece of storytelling where the characters were made alive, even though some of them were ghosts. My favorite story of the bunch was “Jammed” by Seanan McGuire, which creatively combined roller derby and a chimera. The last tale of the bunch was also a favorite, “Bell, Book, and Candlepin” by Toni L. P. Kelner, which mixed together a werewolf, witch, and bowling alley. Overall, an engaging group of stories. ( )

Games Creatures Play is an entertaining anthology from fifteen contributors, with each short story featuring the unusual combination of the paranormal and sports.

Some of the authors didn’t venture too far from their comfort zone. ‘Into the Blue Hereafter’ by Charlaine Harris is set at a softball game in Bon Temps, where Sookie Stackhouse and Manfred Bernado meet for the first time. Similarly Seanan McGuire doesn’t stray far from the familiarity of her InCryptid series, ‘Jammed,’ in which a chimera is on the rampage during a Roller Derby, features Antimony Price. I enjoyed both stories in part at least because of my familiarity with the characters and their worlds.

My favourites included Scott Sigler’s ‘The Case of the Haunted Safeway’, a ghostly tale of love and baseball which managed to be funny, sweet and a little bit spooky all at the same time, Jan Burke’s ‘Stepping into the Dead Zone’ which portrays dodgeball as a test of loyalty and friendship, and ‘Bell, Book and Candlepin‘ by Toni L. P. Kelner in which more than just the bowling balls are returned.

In Games Creatures Play you will find witches, monster stompers, faeries, Gods, ghosts and more, all playing to win and even though I have very little interest in sport in general, I really enjoyed this anthology. Get ready, get set and go… pick up a copy today. ( )
