This is a Precious Ramotswe mystery for young Readers .
Precious has two new friends at school, Teb and Pontsho and they have a pet meerkat Kosi that they rescued when it was a baby and cut off from its family. One day when her friend's cow goes missing and Precious must solve the mystery of where the cow is and how they can prove it is theirs to get it back.
Funniest part is when the meerkat runs into the teacher's staff room at school and ends up on the deputy Principals head.
Short ,nicely Illustrated book for children around the age of 8 to 10. Also a nice adult segue from the No 1 Ladies detective agency too. ( )

Summary:

They are a poorer family but Precious does not care, she shows them great kindness and befriends them right away. They take Precious to their house and introduce her to their pet Meerkat that they found on the hill behind their house. The three kids have many adventures with the Meerkat, including tracking Teb and Pontsho's lost cow, that Precious uses her detective skills to find.
Comments:
This Early chapter book is great to have in the classroom because it has many curriculum connections. Like Geography, teachers could use this book to teach their students about Botswana and Africa, the back of the book has many facts/vocabulary about Botswana. Also a curriculum connection of science/biology. Teachers could use the book to interest their students in learning about the Meerkat and other wildlife in Africa. I also really enjoyed that in the back of the book were discussion questions that a teacher could use after they read the book as a class. ( )

Precious wants to be a detective when she grows up. She is always practicing at being a detective by asking questions and finding out about other people’s lives. There are two new students in her class, a girl called Teb and a boy called Pontsho. She learns that they are brother and sister, and—even more exciting—that Pontsho has a clever pet meerkat named Kosi.

One day, Teb and Pontsho’s family’s cow disappears. Precious helps them look for clues to find the cow. But getting the cow back home will require some quick thinking and help from an unexpected source.

Like the first book in this series, I really enjoyed this story. I think this story provides a very positive message to young readers as well as providing an intriguing mystery. The illustrations in this book are very good and suit the story well. I love and appreciate the fact that the author puts additional information about Africa as well as a Reader’s Guide and Curriculum Connections at the back of the book.

I think this book would be a great one to include in a school curriculum. In the Curriculum Connections section there are pre-reading activities, discussion questions and post-reading activities. I believe this book could provide a very animated classroom discussion. ( )
