Speculation of what it would be like if we sent a team into space and something happened on the return trip to sling them into the future has been around for a while. In a scenario that is a mixture of Planet of the Apes and Buck Rogers in the 25th century, this story assumes a group of astronauts goes out to explore Mars, only to hit an unexplained space phenomenon on the return trip. They end up on a strange planet and have to start from scratch.

Nick is a man with a solid career, but not in control of his emotional life. He drifts from relationship to relationship, sometimes has more than one at the same time, and cannot find what he is looking for anywhere. His problem is that he knows whom he wants – but he thinks he cannot have him. The mission to Mars is just one way for him to stay close to the man he knows he can never have, and when everything goes wrong with the mission, something finally goes right for Nick’s love life.

Doc is quite a bit older than Nick, in fact, he took Nick in when he was 15 and his own parents rejected him. So there is some history to deal with. The problem Doc faces is that his children are grown and have their own lives now, and his feelings for Nick have changed over the years. He has begun to want Nick with a vengeance and the extreme situation they face brings everything out in the open. Would he have done something about his wanting Nick had they not ended up in space together? Who knows. I am happy they did have the opportunity to confront their fears and figure out what was really important to them.

I liked that, different from many of the other sci-fi stories that are based on a scenario similar to what the crew of the MRM faces, the focus of this story is the relationship between Nick and Doc. If it is true that some couples need to face extreme circumstances before they are able to admit what they feel, these two men face just about the worst case scenario imaginable. If you like sci-fi stories that involve time travel, a sense of adventure, and two men who come to terms with how they feel for each other, you will probably like this novella.
