Pakkend geschreven, je leest het vlot weg. Zwagerman heeft een prettige schrijfstijl, ik word langzamerhand fan. Uit het leven gegrepen. ( )

Theo Altena, dertiger, leraar Nederlands, gelukkig getrouwd, krijgt een affaire met de Surinaamse docente Iris Pompier. Aanvankelijk slaagt Theo in het maskeren van zijn overspel. Maar hij verraadt zichzelf door zijn al te plotselinge zorg over racisme en discriminiatie. Theo's waakzaamheid verandert in een troebele fixatie. Een roman over liefde, leugens, zelfbedrog en hypocrisie in het multiculturele Nederland. ( )

Aber selbst das völlige Fehlen von Komik und jeglichem ironischen Abstand zu sich und seinen pubertären Allüren könnte man dem Ich-Erzähler noch verzeihen, nicht aber die dreimalige Wiederholung, dass Iris in diesem Buch nur Iris heißt, weil ihre Haut so wunderbar irisierend ist. Das überschreitet die Grenze zwischen Erzähler und Autor. Es kommt der Verdacht auf, dass man die ganze Zeit nicht Teil einer Erzählstrategie war, die den Leser in die Widersprüche seines eigenen kleinen Rassismus zu verwickeln sucht, sondern der Stimme eines Autors gelauscht hat, der einfach nur penetrant ist.
