I call this series the clipper ship of gamebooks, because the clipper ship was the perfection of mercantile sailing technology -- which arrived just as steamships made sailing ships obsolete. The Fabled lands books similarly arrived as the market for gamebooks collapsed in the mid 1990s. Hopefully the 2010 reprint will give the series a well-deserved second chance at commercial success. The Fabled Lands books allow free wandering within and between the books. Like the Elder Scrolls computer games they are the closest thing in gamebooks to a truly open roleplaying experience. It's hard to say if I've actually 'finished' the books in such a context, but I can review the bits I've seen.

The War Torn Kingdom is the first book in the series and supposedly the easiest. Certainly I found many missions to do there, although some areas are still quite dangerous. The writing and illustrations (by Russ Nicholson) are very good. ( )
