Neither of these short novels is as good as Mr. Theroux's best fiction, but, in true Jekyll and Hyde tradition, what is good in ''Dr. DeMarr'' can serve as antidote for what is bad in ''Doctor Slaughter.'' Return to ''The Mosquito Coast'' or ''Picture Palace'' to discover what is better still.
