In this book, Julia Gousseva offers a unique insight into Russian life during one of the most drastic political, economic, and social upheavals: the disintegration and ultimately the collapse of the Soviet Union. Set against this tubulent background, rife with confusion about Russia’s future, here is the quiet, lovely voice of Anya, as she goes through her coming of age.

At first she she promises to wait for Victor, her boyfriend, while he completes his military training. Then she agrees to marry Yuri, and prepares to be a military wife in a forsaken, cold land, where he serves as submarine officer in the Russian Northern Fleet. It is through the struggle that she gains a new perspective of her life, which is poignantly symbolized with a little memento from high school:

“Anya put her hand in her pocket and felt something there. She pulled it out. It was a small silver bell on the red silk ribbon from her high school, a memento of her life as a school girl and a reminder that she had embarked on a new life, an adult life, the moment she left the school.”

With all the unexpected twists and turns, and especially with the surprising event at the end, will she come closer to a sense of stability—or will it remain as illusive as ever? Will she embrace the big change, in herself and in her country, or will she continue to fight it?
