-Everything James Cain's written. The Postman Always Rings Twice, Double Indemnity and Mildred Pierce are all overshadowed by their film adaptations at this point, and really, they're not very interesting books, anyway.

Coming soon: Reyner Banham's ... spyre - What about some good old fashioned noirs? Mildred Pierce especially came to mind when I read your post. Also, if you like the Ripley series, try Patricia Highsmith's other books. The Blunderer fits the "bad guy" bill, and is a great book.
ETA: oops! Cayce is obviously a faster typist ... ... of his most famous works, Double Indemnity and The Postman Always Rings Twice, are written from the bad guy's POV. (Mildred Pierce is another well worth reading.) Recently finished:
