I have finally added comments about Moloka'i by Alan Brennert (book #108, msg 44) and The Gospel of Mary of Magdala by Karen L. King (book #109, msg 47).
I really liked both books. Slowly, slowly making very brief visits to the US. Went to one state in October, Hawaii, with Molo'kai by Alan Brennert, the life story (fiction) of a girl who is ripped from her family at age 6 and sent to the leper colony on Molo'kai. The story interweaves historical events and characters ... Molo'kai by Alan Brenner-the life story of a young girl who is ripped from her family at age 6 and sent to the leper colony at Molo'kai. The book interweaves historical events and people with its fictional characters. Sometimes the interaction of the real and fictional seems forced, and the ... ... read, but Ali did not seem to have control of her story-lines, and there was a totally unbelievable ending.

This is the story of a girl who was ripped from her loving family at age 6 and sent to the leper colony on Molo'kai, where she lived most ... October Recap
My favorite book this month was The Girl Who Played with Fire, but Moloka'i and The Gospel of Mary of Magdala were also very good. I still need to add some comments about these last two, which I'll try to do in the next couple of days.

... 108. Moloka'i by Alan Brennert, 4*
Category: USA (Hawaii)
When we visited Maui (in 1989, I think), we could see the island of Moloka'i across the water from our hotel room. I was fascinated when I found out that it (still) contained a leper colony. I'd agree with your assessment of Moloka'i. Probably the reason I found it more enjoyable that I would otherwise have, is because I knew pretty much nothing about the topic. But as a story it was pretty weak - no real conflict or resolution. tjsjohanna, I too have read Of Mice and Men. It was in high school. Very simple but powerful and sad.
We also read Moloka'i by Alan Brennert for a RL book group. They liked it, but I thought the best that could be said was it had a stunning cover.

Moloka'i - read for bookclub and enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. Learned all kinds of stuff about the leper colony on Moloka'i.

Moloka'i I didn't find is sad, so much as underwhelming, uninformative and boring. Gorgeous cover though.

Virico ... ... felt contrived to me. I also thought the descriptions could have been more colorful. But my book club loved it though!), Moloka'i (way too sad, ridiculously sad), and Walking in Circles Before Lying Down (just lame). The only HF about Hawai'i that I know of are Hawai'i by James A. Michener, and Molokai by Alan Brennert. I read the Michener one some years ago, but I do remember that there was some pre-missionary stories, as I do remember the natives arriving by canoe from Bora-Bora.

Timbuktu by Paul Auster #80 - Moloka'i . . . I've never heard of this book, but I'm always interested in good books about Hawai'i for when we travel there. This sounds great . . . until I read the objections in your review. Both those points would have really bothered me too. Oh well, I guess I'll keep looking for that ... I am finished with Moloka'i and am now totally engrossed in Resistance by Owen Sheers.
