With its coffee-table dimensions and plentiful photographs, this book has the appearance and heft of an exhibition catalogue, and in some ways that is what it is. The complete, restored film works of Pasolini were screened in various US locations in 2013, and came to Toronto in early 2014 in an Canadian-exclusive retrospective at the TIFF Lightbox—and the book does catalogue them film by film, in chronological order.

However, rather than containing lengthy third-party/critical interpretations of Pasolini’s films, this volume gathers texts in which Pasolini himself speaks about his own work. It includes interviews and director statements along with “self-interviews, excerpts of film treatments, preparatory notes, fragments of screenplays, unpublished typescripts and personal writings.”

In this way it is both an incredibly rich resource and not really suitable as a basic introduction. Pasolini’s self-expression ranges from dizzyingly referential to frustratingly oblique—as with his films, one finds that several takes can be required to work out his multiple meanings. If there exists a “Pasolini for Dummies” in English book form, I have yet to stumble across it. My own hard-won understanding of his films, such as it is, comes from multiple viewings, interviews and commentary features on DVDs, and so forth. But I can say that reading these texts has definitely enriched my recent viewings.

As not just a textual account of his work, but also a visual one, the book includes many examples of “the work of the extraordinary photographers who were present on his film sets,” 15 of whom are listed at the back of the book.

Very much a must-have for anyone with more than a passing interest in the enigma that was Pier Paolo Pasolini. ( )

This fantastic Pasolini compendium examines the great Italian director and author's life through a detailed survey of his films. Opening with Accattone (1961) and closing with Salò (1975), followed by a section on unrealized works, Pier Paolo Pasolini: My Cinema devotes a chapter to each of Pasolini's movies, supplementing stills and a wealth of documentary material with extended commentary by Pasolini on each film, in the form of interviews, journal notes, stories and essays, as well as screenplay excerpts. The four unrealized films discussed in the book's final chapter are The Savage Father (1963), Notes for a Poem on the Third World (1968), Saint Paul (1968) and Porno-Teo-Kolossal (1973). Also included are photos by some of the great Italian set photographers: Angelo Pennoni, Angelo Novi, Mario Tursi, Mario Dondero, Mimmo Cattarinich, Deborah Beer, Bruno Brunia and Roberto Villa. The book closes with an album of photographs from the archive of Laura Betti, the actress and singer who was Pasolini's close friend and confidante, which include photos of Pasolini with his mother, and in the company of writers such as Alberto Moravia, Carlo Emilio Gadda and Ezra Pound. Set designer Dante Ferretti, who began his career with Pasolini, contributes a foreword. My Cinema offers the most succinct statement of the director's vision in print.
