Read during Winter 2002

Nick's life is falling apart. He has left his wife but she comes after him, he loves her and wants to be with her and yet recognizes it is impossible. She begins an affair with a morally corrupt French nobleman as Nick is befriended by an Algerian worker who will not become invovled in the FLN politics of terror. Is everyone trying to work a deal on everyone else? Who is truthful? Who is sincere in the international 50's jet set of the French Rivera? It sounds like a terrifically trite novel but it works very well.
