a readable and enjoyable book that explores the world of physics string theory is now it's quantum gravity. reading it is escaping from our world into a new and exciting world ( )

A wonderful popularization, needing to be read by everyone with a claim to be an educated person. It greatly elaborates on the bestselling little _Seven Brief Lessons on Physics_. A sampling of the book's more surprising or controversial contentions: The first giant of science was Democritus, and Lucretius's _De Rerum Natura_ luckily relayed bits of his wisdom down to us through the dark ages (which were brought on by monotheistic religion). A forefront concept from special relativity is the "extended present" (the observer's inaccessible-elsewhere region). A forefront concept from general relativity is that space and the gravitational field are basically the same thing, It was Heisenberg and Dirac, not Schrödinger, who properly completed the formulation of quantum mechanics, which should be interpreted relationally. In the still-nascent theory known as loop quantum gravity, space consists of ultra-tiny "atoms" of volume joined in a "spin network", and these are the quanta of the gravitational field. Time does not separately exist at this level, but spacetime emerges as "spinfoam" from the internal interactions (including mergings and splittings) of the spin network. The answer to "What is everything made of?" is "covariant quantum fields".
