Chloe's relationship with the father of her unborn child is one of abuse. She has decided that in order to protect that child she must escape his control. When she awakens one evening alone and shaking from another nightmare, she quickly packs a bag and drives quietly away. She drove all night and was exhausted so she pulled off the road and quickly fell asleep. She was awakened by a tapping on the driver's side window by a man who introduced himself as Jayden Peterson, the local Chief of Police. He was just checking on her to make sure she was OK and to point out that she was in a no parking zone. She ended up following him to a nearby diner for coffee and a bit of breakfast. Jayden tries to get the story out of the obviously distressed young woman, but she would not share her story. The owner of the diner, a friend of Jayden's offered Chloe a job and a temporary place to live. Since she had very little money she agreed to the offer.
The characters are likable, except for the abuser, who plays his role rather well. The story line has a lot of emotion, a bit of mystery, and romance. I enjoyed the book very much. ( )
