De oesters van Nam Kee is een roman, geen sociologische beschouwing, en geen levensechte reportage. Zij doet uiteindelijk geen uitspraak over 'de Berry's' in West, over pubers zonder grenzen, eenoudergezinnen en falend gezag, want daar is de literatuur niet voor. In die roman is het portret van deze jongen volstrekt overtuigend, en ontroerend. Van alle verhalen die in de zichtbare werkelijkheid besloten kunnen liggen, koos de verteller Van Beijnum dit ene. Hij deugt niet, deze Berry, dat is zeker, maar je kunt niet anders dan blindelings zijn partij kiezen.
