Mutagenesis by Orrin Grey (2014) is a dark, enjoyable story about the ogrun Thagrosh and his efforts to escape from Khadoran slavers in the brutally cold, northern wildnerness. I was pleasantly reminded of other wilderness / being hunted stories like "The Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell and "Deathwatch" by Robb White. Grey puts his own spin on the tale by setting it in the Iron Kingdoms and making his protagonist a brutally strong and tireless ogrun (an ogre-like humanoid), who experiences dream-like visions leading him to a frozen peak, where his destiny awaits. If the story were a little more original, or Thagrosh a little more interesting in terms of psychology (or at least if our dogged protagonist had come up with a few more clever traps for the hunters), I might have given the story another half-star. Still, it was a fun, short read, and as a plus, it does offer ideas that might be usable in the Iron Kingdoms tabletop role-playing game. ( )
