This resource has been designed as a reference guide for anyone who has been affected by a diagnosis of autism, including Asperger syndrome living in Scotland. Predominately aimed at parents and carers with a child who has recently been diagnosed with an ASD, it may also be a useful resource for the rest of the family including siblings, grandparents, partners of people with ASD and the individual with ASD themselves. It aims to bridge the gap between diagnosis and access to services by providing the relevant information that parents and families desperately require at this crucial time. It should answer many of the questions people may have about how to help an individual with an ASD and where to go for further help and advice. The resource is not exhaustive but aims to be a helping hand at a time when individuals, families and carers are most in need of guidance. The first part of this resource contains general information on autism including a definition and description of autistic spectrum disorders, common behaviour and communication problems, guidance on education and welfare benefits, as well as an overview of interventions and approaches. At the end of each section, where appropriate, there is a list of resources, recommended reading and references. Inserted at the back is a list of organisations and local services with their contact details. This pack can be obtained by residents in Scotland only from their local authority.
