Frankly, a disappointment after Fortress of Solitude. Maybe it's an East-Coast/West-Coast thing, but I just found the characters unsympathetic and ultimately vapid and uninteresting (&/or underdeveloped); it was probably a bad sign that I ... ... and Mr. Norrell, so I'm reading a couple of shorter novels with contemporary settings so I won't finish JS&MN too soon: You Don't Love Me Yet and "Adam Haderburg" by Yasmina Reza (in English translation). The Exes by Pagan Kennedy (2) The book I wanted Jonathan Lethem's You Don't Love Me Yet to be. ... count five. I've liked not one 2007 novel I've read this year. I was particularly disappointed in Jonathan Lethem's You Don't Love Me Yet. ... Fortress of Solitude, then I read Motherless Brooklyn and both were great. I'm looking forward to reading his new one, You Don't Love Me Yet.
So, who do you suggest aspiring writers should read? Why? ... translation of it later this year.
I've always called myself a big Jonathan Lethem fan, but I found his new novel You Don't Love Me Yet to be so profoundly inane and uninteresting that I tossed it after a hundred pages and was glad I did. It all seemed rather dumbed-down, almost like ... Jonathan Lethem's You Don't Love Me...Chapter 3 was phone sex disguised as performance art.
the book is full of snappy dialogue that keeps the story moving along. So far it is a quick, light read. My first try with this author - looks like he is worth exploring. I do have Motherless Brook ... In today's mail from a bookseller in NYC, an ARC of Jonathan Lethem's new novel You Don't Love Me Yet.
