Captain Jubilee “Lee” Chase is a soldier serving on the politically volatile planet of Avon and tasked with keeping order and maintaining the current cease fire. Flynn Cormac is a leader within the rebel group, but he would rather negotiate than attempt a violent rebellion. Circumstances bring the formidable Chase and pacifist rebel together, and, despite conflicting loyalties, they find themselves forming a reluctant, uneasy, sure-to-be-tested alliance that places their lives in danger from both sides of the tense cease fire. Any qualms I had about a new pair of characters taking center stage in this series (the Starbound trilogy) were quickly erased. As with Tarver and Lilac in the first book (These Broken Stars), both characters are strong, capable, and more complex than they appear and find themselves in unanticipated and perilous circumstances. Yet, it’s not the same story. It’s tempting to reduce it to an adaptation of Romeo and Juliet in space (and the authors certainly invite those comparisons), but it’s more than a story of boy-meets-girl that he never should have met, and the world carefully created by the authors is one you’ll want to visit. Technically, it’s not necessary to read "These Broken Stars" first, but it’s recommended since there are ties back to the first book. Fans of books by Veronica Rossi and Beth Revis are likely to enjoy the interesting blend of romance, suspense, and science fiction.

I absolutely, totally and utterly love and enjoyed This Shatter World! I truly missed the Starbound world so much. Now this is a companion book too These Broken Stars but all the books are interconnected stories together so we do see Lilac and Tarver in This Shattered World along with the evil Roderick LaRoux and his Corporation . Now this is Jubilee and Flynn book a soldier and rebel who believe there are fighting for the right reason and cause. Jubilee Chase is a is captain on Avon that is a rebellious colonists and she totally despise rebels for a reason. Flynn Cormac is a rebel and rebellion is in his blood his sister Orla was the original leader of the rebel group on Avon, but she died in the original uprising against the powerful corporate conglomerate that rules Avon with an iron fist. Now Flynn the leader of the rebel group and he is very desperate too end the unrelenting and bloodthirsty war that is between the rebels and TerraDyn. He didn't believe his sister way in the rebellion he just wants peace between his people and TerraDyn. And Flynn wants answers from TerraDyn too know why his planet is not getting any better too be on livable condition for his people and the children when they promised for a better life for them. But Flynn does the unthinkable too seek answers he kidnaps Jubilee and take her as prisoner too his base that is in the swamp. Flynn thinks he can exchanged Jubilee for information that he wants from TerraDyn even though they don't negotiate with rebels. But when Flynn fellow rebels prepare to execute Jubilee who have nerves of steel he makes another choice that will change him forever. Flynn and Jubilee escape the rebel base together, caught between two sides of a senseless war. But by the end of the book they find out the truth way the planet is not getting any better and the secret that LaRoux Corporation is keeping from everybody on the planet of Avon! And here is where I am going to leave off at without spoiling it for anybody. I so can't wait too read Their Fractured Light soon I have it on hold on the library but I should be getting it any day now! But I do most definitely and highly recommend reading the Starbound series it really is an amazing and great book series that I just can't get enough of this book series! ( )

The first book in this series was a fun read... great mix of sci-fi elements including the classic stranded on a planet scenario. The second book features different characters and definitely ramps the story up to the next level. Again, classic sci-fi storylines of (sort of) indigenous people fighting the occupying military with a Romeo and Juliet theme thrown in the mix... how could you not haha. But I really like the universe they have created with the terraforming rules/regulations, outside corporations, the military's role in all of it... plus inter-dimensional beings.. come on! It's awesome. ( )

Jubilee & Flynn...

In the second book in the Starbound trilogy, This Shattered World, we get to meet a new set of "star-crossed lovers," Captain Jubilee Chase and rebel, Flynn Cormac. They live on a planet called Avon which has been in the process of being terraformed. However, the rebels suspect that someone is delaying the terraforming process an purposely causing the citizens to suffer from a disease called Fury but they aren't sure exactly how or why. Flynn reaches out to Jubilee in hopes that she will hear what he has to say and help him figure out what's going on so they can save Avon and its people.
Going into this book, I was a little disappointed that Tarver and Lilac weren't the stars of the show but after I got to know Jubilee and Flynn, I fell in love with them and their story too. Plus Tarver and Lilac do make a small appearance in this story so that was a nice surprise. The first and second book have both been fantastic though and I'm really looking forward to reading book three. I already know that I'm going to have a huge book hangover when this series ends. It's a definite must read if you like soft sci-fi and space operas. ( )

For a sequel this book takes about half the novel for it to become clear that it is the second in a trilogy. I do not think that it is a bad thing but it is something that I was thinking about as I was reading it. Maybe because I have not reread the first book so maybe I missed some earlier clues that this book was not just written in the same universe but about the same problems and with some similar characters as the first book. I really liked the hero. At first I did not think that I was going to. But Flynn won me over. I liked Jubilee from the beginning and I liked her all the way through. She is a soldier in an impossible problem and with very little help. I like how Kaufman and Spooner are developing the plot about the whispers. I am a little concerned about this being a trilogy. I think that this universe is so big with so much going on that I am not sure that the story can be told in just one more novel. But Flynn and Jubilee's story is finished and I liked it. I am curious about how this is going to end.

I give this book a Five out of Five stars. ( )
