The September issue of Spider magazine features a mix of stories (such as "The Pixie's Bag"), informational pieces ("Amazing Acorns"), silly humor, and activities for children ("Miro's Gourmet PB & J"). Tying it all together, a comic strip-style story involving Spider and his bug friends helps to keep the pages turning. Liberally illustrated, the magazine is suitable for reading aloud to beginning readers as well as providing good practice for those readers who are advancing to the transitional stage. The variety of article styles and topics increases the chances that something will interest a wide range of potential readers. Spider also encourages reader participation through “Spider’s Mailbox” and “Spider’s Corenr”in which children may submit letters, drawings, or photos. This provides not only a chance at the thrill of publication but also sponsors a sense of community and identification between readers and the character of Spider. The format makes it easily useful for assignments in classroom settings. This magazine is highly recommended for public and grade school media libraries. As Sam the caterpillar says, “Come on in, the jelly’s squishy.” ( )
