middlegrade fiction; western/detective novel/adventure. This is not the first in the series, but it works well as a stand-alone. Really loved that the protagonist is a likeable high-functioning autistic 12-year-old (twice orphaned with a Lakota birth mom) whose gender is a secret (unknown to the reader until the last 1/3 of this story but totally unknown throughout the previous books in the series).
