First off, despite this technically being a prequel to the series I would strongly advise that you at least read The Name of the Star before picking up this one. This book does contain spoilers for the first story and I think you'd otherwise find that it ruins a lot of twists for you.

The Boy in the Smoke is a novella that fleshes out Stephen's backstory (which is referenced in The Name of the Star), detailing everything from his relationship with his sister up until he is recruited by the MI5. I won't say anything more here for fear of spoilers but if you've read the first book, you'll pretty much know how this plays out.

The story isn't really a necessary read but it's fast paced and well written. Stephen often comes across a bit cold in the main series, but this story makes him seem more human and really explains why he is the way he is. While I don't think this book is meaty enough to appeal to people who aren't already fans of the series, people who loved The Name of the Star will certainly get a kick out of it. ( )
