It is a very small picture book about the birthday party for Nimbletoes he squirrel. He has several adventures during the day --he finds a lost young rabbit; his mother goes to find the rabbit's mother and then he goes to find his mother, but both get back safe in time for the party. During the party he sees a fox lurking outside, but he gets a friendly hound to chase away the fox. The general effect is like a very minor Beatrix Potter --the animals wear clothes and behave like humans, though the squirrel does gather nuts (in a basket) and run through the trees. The illustrations are nicely done and perhaps more Potterish than the story itself. ( )
