Sign up for LibraryThing to find out whether you'll like this book. No current Talk conversations about this book. The second book in the continuing story of Darrow and his many friends and enemies. It's often hard to tell which is which for Darrow and you feel his sadness as they move back and forth or die altogether. Each book is a level up from the last in this series and each ending seems to one up the last. This book deserves all the praise it's gotten. Edit: After reading the third book I don't wish to change my review, but I do want to warn that this series is centre right, liberal conservative propaganda masking as revolutionary and you should pay attention to the red flags. This Series has Me Gory Damn Hooked! Another phenomenal installment of Red Rising, which has quickly become my favourite book series. This universe, these characters, the concepts and ideals explored, and the raw emotion and brutal action continue to be magnificent. The level of emotional development and insight to Darro is a touch less than the first offering, though still very much there, and understandable with just how much he goes through in the first book. Look, I know that Audible is doing the dealer thing of offering the first two tastes for free, so I chomp at the bit for more and I know I have a ridiculous library of books to bridge the nine days before my credit comes in. But I need the third book right bloody damn now and I don't care when a series is this gory good. Im still absolutely gobsmacked I hadn't heard of this before, but feel very lucky to have so many books to catch up on! no reviews | add a review

HTML:NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Red Rising hit the ground running and wasted no time becoming a sensation. Golden Son continues the stunning saga of Darrow, a rebel forged by tragedy, battling to lead his oppressed people to freedom. NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY NPR, BUZZFEED, AND BOOKLIST • “Gripping . . . On virtually every level, this is a sequel that hates sequels—a perfect fit for a hero who already defies the tropes. [Grade:] A”—Entertainment Weekly As a Red, Darrow grew up working the mines deep beneath the surface of Mars, enduring backbreaking labor while dreaming of the better future he was building for his descendants. But the Society he faithfully served was built on lies. Darrow’s kind have been betrayed and denied by their elitist masters, the Golds—and their only path to liberation is revolution. And so Darrow sacrifices himself in the name of the greater good for which Eo, his true love and inspiration, laid down her own life. He becomes a Gold, infiltrating their privileged realm so that he can destroy it from within. A lamb among wolves in a cruel world, Darrow finds friendship, respect, and even love—but also the wrath of powerful rivals. To wage and win the war that will change humankind’s destiny, Darrow must confront the treachery arrayed against him, overcome his all-too-human desire for retribution—and strive not for violent revolt but a hopeful rebirth. Though the road ahead is fraught with danger and deceit, Darrow must choose to follow Eo’s principles of love and justice to free his people. He must live for more. Praise for Golden Son “Stirring . . . Comparisons to The Hunger Games and Game of Thrones series are inevitable, for this tale has elements of both.”—Kirkus Reviews “Brown writes layered, flawed characters . . . but plot is his most breathtaking strength. . . . Every action seems to flow into the next.”—NPR Don’t miss any of Pierce Brown’s Red Rising Saga: RED RISING • GOLDEN SON • MORNING STAR • IRON GOLD • DARK AGE. No library descriptions found.

In a way, it is a better book than the first one. There is less world-building (which I loved) and more action (better than in the last book, but still boring).
But, I didn't enjoy reading it. It felt like a chore and I was so happy when I finished. I even considered DNFing it. Things got old really quickly and although there is a lot going on, it is just a drag altogether. There is something about the style that just doesn't vibe with me. The book has too many twists and too many unimportant characters which makes it somewhat superficial. I didn't care about the characters, Darrow's plot armor is thick enough to get him through anything. And the relationships are boring. The setting is still great though, but it is not enough on its own.
I did like Sevro, he is my favourite character in the series.
It didn't help that I decided to get this in Croatian translation, which was horrible, but I switched back to the original after a few chapters. However, nothing helped to improve the impression. 2.5 stars rounded up.
