"Outside the Box" is a 171 page book filled with poems. These poems are about everything- from animals, kites to aliens. The poems have their own illustrations and format of how they are written. Some of the poems are written upside down and even sideways. This keeps the students interested and wanting to read more poems. Some poems are only a few words, which is better for younger readers. The main idea of these poems is for entertainment and to teach students about rhymes and different types of poems. ( )

I enjoyed these funny, silly, sometimes gross book of poetry. With a genre hard to jump into, this book allows for great readers' attention and whimsical illustrations. I recommend this book for elementary and middle school students. Many poems would be great jumping off point to create fan fiction similarities.

Even though these poems do bear some resemblance to the classic poems of Shel Silverstein, they still maintain their own style. There are explorations of all sorts of different poems. Some poems move across the page, interact directly with the illustrations, or they explore different rhyme schemes. It's great for showing that poems can vary wildly from one to the next and how your poems doesn't necessarily have to look like someone else's. The poems also treat with a broad range of subjects including feelings, dreams, fears, family, food, morality, and creativity. A great book for tracking the way that words and images work together or how words can become the image.

Summary: A large collection of humorous poems in the vein of Shel Silverstein. Black and white illustrations that look like drawing/ ink pen medium. Targeted for a young reader, large and easy to read text font. Light overtones, easy to read, great book for a read aloud session in a young classroom!

Personal reflection/ commentary: The second I opened this book I thought of "Where the Sidewalk Ends" by Shel Silverstein. Although the style of poetry isn't quite up my alley, I thought it would be perfect for kids. The illustrations look like hand drawn doodles almost, except obviously much better. Very un-intimidating for a young reader! Funny topics, rhyming stanzas. ( )
