Avery vivid recreation of the legendary Amazons who fought in the Trojan War as a credible feminist society. The book presents their participating the war as the downfall of their culture. There are some interesting twists --it starts by sympathetically describing the return to the Amazons of a woman who had been out in the world, but ultimately this woman brings in outside influences that tend to corrupt the culture. When the Amazons do go to fight for Troy, there is a wonderful encounter between an Amazon leader and Helen of Troy, who has been very successful in her own way by playing in a man's world. --total mutual incomprehension.
Some aspects of these Amazons suggest influence on the Amazons in Marin Zimmer Bradley's The Firebrand, by no means her best work. ( )
