Apples should be red
This ‘salt and pepper’ novelette follows the relationship of Bev (recently widowed and mother of Karen) and Tom (father of John ) who are thrown together at Tom’s house over Thanksgiving Holiday. Karen and John are married.
Bev is prim and proper, keeps a clean and tidy house, enjoys an active social life and is a bit of a control freak. Tom is scruffy, unkempt, smokes, drinks, is very anti-social and opinionated, doesn’t give a dam about housework and cusses all the time. Opposites in lifestyles, opinions and apple preferences. They have known each other for a long time and seem to have put up with each other only because they are ‘in laws’.
Due to circumstance’s Bev is forced to stay at Tom’s and is expected to prepare and cook the usual gourmet holiday dinner. Right from the start Tom is being awkward, course and brash, but is seeing Bev in a new light now she is single and available.
Personally I was put off Tom a little due to his course language and thoughts and doubted the relationship turn-around could have happened so quickly. However, on saying that I wanted to finish the story to find out the ending.
An enjoyable humorous story where, due to the length is very fast paced and things happen very quickly.
